I've been in a reading frenzy lately. Summertime tends to spark something in me that makes me want to pick up a book. Perhaps it's all the free time I have. (Yeah right.) Or all those beach trips. Or perhaps it's that all the books I want to read are coming to theaters. Yeah, that sounds more like it - I've used this entire summer to play catch-up with the motion picture industry. Let me tell you, it didn't disappoint.
It all started with Water for Elephants. Solid book, solid movie. If you get the time, check them both out! I will warn you, there are a few graphic parts, but it doesn't spoil the story. And if you want to fall in love with an elephant and not a human (as I did), this is your book.
After watching Rob Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon fall in love, I dove into The Help. You already know from a previous post how much I loved the movie, but the book was even more worth spending time on. Kathryn Stockett's writing will not disappoint you. She is very gifted at telling stories, so make sure you read this book.
Then I embarked on a trilogy of young adult fiction - The Hunger Games. Some of you may grumble at this point or some of you may be jumping up and down. I've found that I get very widespread reactions when I mention the series. Most people enjoyed reading it, but didn't like the way Suzanne Collins chose to end it. Personally, I loved it. I thought she did a very good job tying up the loose ends and managing to keep some sort of love story. At the very least, it's a quick read because it's written for a younger audience - I finished book one in about 24 hours and the rest of the series in a matter of a few weeks. I haven't seen the movie yet, so I'll give you the full report once it comes out. You can see a sneak peek of the movie here (and believe me when I say "peek" because there's not much to it).
Finally, I'm about to start working on Stieg Larsson's series about The Girl who did a lot of things. I've been told the first 100 pages make you want to rip your eyeballs out, - how exciting - but after that, it's a wonderfully crafted and well-woven story. (Wow, what Ws!) I'll let you know how this series turns out. It could be a while before I finish since I'm starting my graduate courses now and working full-time.
Any good books on your reading list? Let me know if you have any suggestions!
